Cooperstown sits at the south end of Otsego Lake, where the Susquehanna River begins, in Otsego County. It’s a one-light village with a famous museum: the National Baseball Hall of Fame is on Main Street, a few blocks from the water. Most visitors come for that and leave. The better trip adds the lake, a cider mill and a state park walk, and October is the month to do it, before half the area closes for winter.
Cooperstown isn’t in the Catskills, but it’s an easy reach from the north end of them. It’s about an hour and 20 minutes from Jefferson, where we’re building our next cabin. For the mountain towns, see our Hunter, Tannersville, Phoenicia, Windham and Woodstock field guides.

Things to do in Cooperstown this fall
1. The Sleeping Lion Trail at Glimmerglass
Trail · Sleeping Lion Trail over Mount Wellington
- Distance: about a 2-mile loop, or roughly 2.4 miles if you walk back on the park road.
- Climb: close to 500 feet, steep at the start, with roots and muddy patches.
- View: Otsego Lake through the trees on the way down.
- Park: the lot across from Hyde Hall, past the Glimmerglass State Park entrance on County Highway 31. About 20 minutes from the village.
- Hours and fee: dawn to dusk, all year. State Parks charges a vehicle fee in season, so check at the booth.
- From our Juniper Ridge build: about 1 hour 25 minutes.
Mount Wellington is the “sleeping lion” you see from the water, a long wooded hump at the north end of the lake. Start on the side of Hyde Hall away from the lake so the lake views come on the way down. Dogs are welcome on a leash no longer than six feet. Afterward, walk across the Hyde Hall Covered Bridge, built around 1825 and said to be the oldest covered bridge still standing in the country, and take a mansion tour while they still run, through October 31.

What we bring for a lake-country hike
Knees
Cascade Mountain Tech Carbon Trekking Poles
The Sleeping Lion climbs hard at the start and gets slick with wet leaves. Poles help on the way down.
Light
LHKNL Rechargeable Headlamp, 2-pack
The park closes at dusk, and dusk comes early in late October. Two in the box, USB-C charging.
Warmth
HotHands Hand Warmers, 10 pairs
For a cold lakeside morning, and a jug of cider that should ride home chilled anyway.
2. Fly Creek Cider Mill
About three miles from the village, Fly Creek Cider Mill is a water-powered mill on a millpond, with a store, a snack barn and a tasting room for hard cider and apple wine. USA Today readers just voted it the best cidery in the country. The draw in fall is the 1889 water-driven press, which runs when the cider sells, not on a schedule, so check the mill’s pressing note the morning you go. Our sister site has the full plan in Fly Creek Cider Mill: a fall day trip from the Catskills.
3. The Hall of Fame, off-season
October is a good month for the Hall of Fame: summer tournament crowds are gone, and it keeps 9-to-5 hours almost every day of the year. Plan two to three hours. Your hand stamp lets you leave for lunch on Main Street and come back the same day. On October 10 and 11 the museum takes part in New York’s Path Through History Weekend.
4. Fenimore Art Museum and Fenimore Farm
The two museums sit across Route 80 from each other, about a mile north of the village on the lake’s west shore. The art museum opened a new American Masterworks Gallery on September 26, and it stays open through December. Fenimore Farm and Country Village, a historic village and working farm, closes for the winter after October 31, so this month is your last chance this year. A two-museum ticket covers both.
5. Brewery Ommegang
Ommegang brews Belgian-style beer about 15 minutes south of the village. The tap house serves food and beer, and the Fire Pit Friday nights with live music end with a patio closing party on October 16. It’s closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
The drive from Jefferson
From Jefferson, in the northern Catskills, the drive to Cooperstown takes about an hour and 20 minutes and runs about 49 miles by Route 10, Route 23 and Route 28 through Stamford. That’s close enough for a long day trip, with dinner back at the cabin. From Clove Creek in Hunter it takes about two hours, so make it a full day or stay the night.

Cooperstown restaurants and coffee
The village is small, and many kitchens close one or two days a week, so plan food around midweek hours.
- The Cooperstown Diner (136½ Main St). Breakfast and lunch on Main Street since 1921. Tuesday to Sunday, 7 to 2. Closed Monday.
- Mel’s at 22 (22 Chestnut St). American plates, burgers and drinks, a few blocks from the Hall. Taco Tuesdays are back this fall.
- Bocca Osteria (5438 State Highway 28). Family-run Italian with pizza from a Naples oven, south of the village. Open daily, 11 to 9.
- The tap house at Brewery Ommegang. Beer with food, Thursday to Monday.
- 1909 at The Otesaga (60 Lake St). The dress-up dinner on the lake, Wednesday to Saturday from 5 to 9, with brunch on Sunday from 10 to 2. Closed October 24.
Parking: paid parking in the village runs through Columbus Day, October 12. The Doubleday Field lot has all-day parking, and Main Street spaces are mostly two-hour metered. After Monday, it gets easier.

Clove Creek Cabin

If you want a cabin this fall, Clove Creek is open now. It sits between two creeks, with a hot tub, a sauna and an indoor fireplace, two queen bedrooms, an Ooni pizza oven and a Solo Stove fire pit on about 600 square feet of deck. Dogs are welcome when they’re on the reservation. Cell service is close to none, but the Wi-Fi is strong and handles Wi-Fi calling. Cooperstown is about two hours away by Route 23A, Route 23 and Route 28, so it’s a full day trip, not a quick one.
It suits two couples doing the Catskills high peaks most of the weekend, with one long day out to the lake and the cider mill.
Juniper Ridge and Clove Creek are run by Unplugged Cabins, our sister brand.
Rather stay in the village? The Otesaga is the grand resort hotel on the lakefront. It used to close after Thanksgiving and is now open all year. The Inn at Cooperstown (16 Chestnut St) is a walk from Main Street, and Hotel Pratt (50 Pioneer St) is home to Sherman’s Tavern. More ideas in our Catskill cabin rentals guide.
Pack for cold nights
Otsego Lake mornings in late October start near freezing, and the wind off the water finds every gap in your jacket. Our packing list lives on the Gear page: camping essentials for cold nights, from a warm bed to a camp kitchen that actually works.
