Checked October 9, 2026. Drive times are our own routing from Times Square with no traffic, so treat them as the best case.
The hardest part of a romantic weekend away from the city isn’t picking the place. It’s being honest about the drive. Two hours in the car feels like a head start. Five hours feels like a commitment, and a Friday on the Thruway can turn one into the other.
So start with the drive. Our sister brand, Unplugged Cabins, keeps an events guide for upstate weekends sorted by how far you’re willing to go from Manhattan: two hours, three hours or five. Pick a number, see what’s on, and build the weekend (or the day) around it. Here’s how we use it.

How the drive-time filters work
The page opens with a line we like: “Upstate is closer than you think.” Under it are two ways in.
- Explore this weekend takes you straight to a short list of picks for the coming Saturday and Sunday.
- Or start with the drive: the 2 hours, 3 hours and 5 hours buttons each jump to a section for that drive. Every section links to the full event calendar for its band (2 hours, 3 hours, 5 hours) and to one weekend story to read first.
- The This weekend, upstate list has its own row of buttons: Our picks, 2 hours, 3 hours, 5 hours, Music, Food + cider, Art + makers and Outdoors. Tap one and the event cards swap in place. Each card has a See the weekend link, and some add a Stay nearby link.
The page itself says the times are approximate and that “traffic has opinions.” We agree, so here’s what our routing says from Times Square on an empty road:
- Beacon: about 1 hour 30 minutes.
- Woodstock: about 2 hours 15 minutes.
- Phoenicia and Tannersville: about 2 hours 30 minutes.
- Hunter: about 2 hours 40 minutes.
- Fleischmanns, Windham and Margaretville: 2 hours 50 minutes to 3 hours.
- Delhi: about 3 hours 20 minutes.
- Cooperstown: about 4 hours 25 minutes.
- Lake Placid: closer to 6 hours.
So read the bands as rough. The 2-hour list leans on the Hudson Valley and the nearest Catskills. Most of the mountain towns we write about sit between two and a half and three hours out, and the 5-hour list is really a long weekend.
Two hours: a day trip, or a weekend you decide on Friday
A day trip works when each leg stays under about two and a half hours. Past that, you spend the best light in the car. Leave by 7, eat breakfast where you land, do one thing well and head home before dark.
Day trip · Woodstock and the Overlook fire tower
- Drive: about 2 hours 15 minutes from Times Square without traffic.
- The walk: 2.4 miles each way on an old carriage road to the 1950 fire tower at 3,140 feet, with a side path to a ledge over the Hudson Valley and the Ashokan Reservoir. It’s steady the whole way up, and harder than it sounds.
- After: Tinker Street, a gallery or two, and an early dinner before the drive home.
- Next week: the Woodstock Film Festival runs October 14 to 18, so book dinner early.
More in our Woodstock field guide. For a gentler day, Phoenicia is about 15 minutes farther, and the Phoenicia Diner is open every day but Wednesday, 8 to 6. Go early, because there are no reservations. More ideas for the day in our guides to day trips from NYC and upstate day trips for adults.
Three hours: the romantic weekend
This is the band for two nights. It reaches the high peaks around Hunter and Tannersville, Belleayre and the valley towns on Route 28. The state’s foliage report for October 7 to 13 has Hunter and Haines Falls at 85 percent color, so this weekend and next are the ones.
The plan we keep coming back to is the one Unplugged Cabins lays out in its romantic Catskills getaway: arrive in daylight, one shared outing a day, and evenings by the fire. A few that fit this weekend:
- Colors in the Catskills at Hunter Mountain, October 10 to 11 and 17 to 18. Entry is free, Saturdays run 11 to 6 and Sundays 11 to 5, and the Scenic SkyRide opens at 9 if you want the view before the crowd. See our Hunter field guide.
- The Pumpkin Walk in Tannersville, Saturday, October 10, from 7 to 9 at Rip Van Winkle Lake Park, with the lighting at 7:45. An easy, glowing after-dinner walk. Our Tannersville field guide also has the rules for parking at Kaaterskill Falls.
- Belleayre’s Fall Festival, October 10 and 11, 10 to 5, with free admission. The scenic gondola’s last ride up is at 4:45, and Sunday is its last day of the season. See our Fleischmanns and Margaretville field guides.
- The ridge above Windham, about 3 hours out, for a quieter weekend. See our Windham field guide.
This is also Columbus Day weekend, the busiest of the fall. Go up Friday night if you can, and do the popular things early.

Five hours: make it a long weekend
The 5-hour list reaches the Adirondacks, the Finger Lakes and the far side of the Catskills. Don’t try these as two nights. Take Friday or Monday off, and make the drive part of the trip. Cooperstown is the shortest of them, at about 4 hours 25 minutes, with Otsego Lake, a cider mill and the Hall of Fame. A local tip for color: start in the northwestern Catskills, around Delhi and Andes, and work your way south on the drive home.
Where to stay for two
Open now · Hunter, NY · about 2 hr 45 min from Manhattan
Clove Creek Cabin

Our cabin sits between two creeks off Route 214, about 2 hours 45 minutes from Times Square without traffic. It has a hot tub, a sauna and an indoor fireplace, two queen bedrooms, an Ooni pizza oven and a Solo Stove fire pit on about 600 square feet of deck. Dogs are welcome when they’re on the reservation. Cell service is close to none, but the Wi-Fi is strong and handles Wi-Fi calling. Tannersville is about 12 minutes away and Phoenicia about 15. It’s also a Stay nearby pick on the events guide.
It suits a couple who want the Hunter festival, the Pumpkin Walk or Kaaterskill Falls by day and the hot tub by night.
Juniper Ridge and Clove Creek are run by Unplugged Cabins, our sister brand.
Open now · Tannersville, NY · about 2 hr 30 min from Manhattan
Blue Heron

A quiet two-bedroom cabin a five-minute walk from Tannersville’s Main Street. Sleeps four, takes dogs, and has a fire pit and a real workspace. Good if you’d rather walk to dinner than drive to it.
Coming soon · Jefferson, NY · about 3 hr 35 min from Manhattan
Juniper Ridge

We’re building a modern tiny cabin on Blenheim Hill, near Jefferson in Schoharie County, on about five private acres of maple, beech and birch forest. It’s a single-story, 361-square-foot studio with a full bath, a kitchenette and a small covered porch. The plan includes a hot tub under the trees, a wood-fired sauna, a fire pit and a private trail through the woods.
- Getting there: about 3 hours 35 minutes from Times Square without traffic. That puts it in the 3-hour band, give or take.
- Close by: Mine Kill State Park and Stamford, each about 15 minutes away. Clove Creek is a little over an hour east.
- Where it stands: footings went in in September, and the cabin is being built in the workshop now. The opening date isn’t set yet.
It suits two people who want a small, quiet cabin in the woods, a sauna and not much else.
It isn’t open yet. Join the list and you’ll hear first when it opens.

What we pack for two
October nights in the mountains drop toward freezing, and the best part of the day is after dark. Three things live in our trunk all fall:
Shared warmth
Rumpl Original Puffy 2-Person Blanket
Big enough for two by the fire pit or at a cold overlook. It packs into its own stuff sack and goes in the wash after.
The drive
Stanley Classic Vacuum Bottle, 1.1 qt
Fill it in the city at 6 a.m. and there’s still hot coffee at the trailhead. Enough for two cups each.
After dark
LHKNL Rechargeable Headlamp, 2-pack
One each, for the walk back from the fire or the Pumpkin Walk. USB-C charging.
The full list is on our Gear page: camping essentials for cold nights.
A three-hour weekend, start to finish
- Friday: leave the city by 3, or after 7 to miss the worst of it. Stop for groceries before the mountains, because the stores close early. Fire, then bed.
- Saturday: one outing. Kaaterskill Falls at 8, before the lots fill, or the SkyRide at 9. Lunch in town, then nothing much. The Pumpkin Walk after dinner.
- Sunday: a slow breakfast, one short walk, and leave by 2 to beat the line at the Thruway.
Romantic weekend getaways from NYC: FAQ
What is a good romantic weekend getaway from NYC by car?
For a fall weekend for two, the high Catskills around Hunter and Tannersville are hard to beat: peak color, short hikes to big views, and cabins with a hot tub and a fire. It’s about two and a half to three hours from Midtown without traffic. If you’d rather drive less, Woodstock is a little over two hours.
How far can you go on a day trip from NYC?
Keep each leg under about two and a half hours, or the day turns into a drive. From Times Square without traffic, Beacon is about an hour and a half and Woodstock about two hours and 15 minutes. Leave by 7, and start home before dark.
How do the drive-time filters on the Unplugged Cabins events guide work?
The 2, 3 and 5 hours buttons at the top of the page jump to a section for that drive, each with a link to the full calendar for that band. Lower down, the This weekend, upstate list has the same 2, 3 and 5 hours buttons, plus Music, Food + cider, Art + makers and Outdoors. Each one swaps in that weekend’s events without leaving the page.
How long is the drive from Manhattan to the Catskills?
About two and a quarter hours to Woodstock, two and a half to Phoenicia or Tannersville, and close to three to Windham, Fleischmanns or Margaretville, all without traffic. Add an hour on a Friday afternoon or a holiday weekend.
Is October a good time for a romantic weekend upstate?
It’s the best month, if you plan for the crowds. The state’s foliage report for October 7 to 13 puts Hunter and Haines Falls at 85 percent color. Columbus Day weekend (October 10 to 12 this year) is the busiest of the fall, so book early, go up on Friday night if you can, and keep each day to one outing.
Where should couples stay in the Catskills?
Our Clove Creek Cabin in Hunter, NY is open now, with a hot tub, a sauna and an indoor fireplace. Blue Heron is a quiet two-bedroom cabin a short walk from Tannersville’s Main Street. We’re also building Juniper Ridge, a tiny cabin for two near Jefferson. It isn’t open yet, so join the list to hear first.
