Romantic Getaways Near NYC: 10 Affordable Escapes for Fall and Winter

Checked October 9, 2026, for fall and winter 2026. Drive times are our own routing from Times Square with no traffic, so treat them as the best case. Hours and rates change with the season, so check before you go.

A romantic getaway near NYC doesn’t need a resort or a tasting menu. It needs a different window to look out of, a long walk with no phone in your hand, and a dinner you didn’t have to rush. Most of that is cheap. The expensive part is usually the timing: Saturday nights in peak season.

So this is our list of affordable romantic getaways near NYC for fall and winter 2026, closest first. Each one comes with a free or low-cost thing to do, a place to stay that we’ve checked, and what’s on this season. If you’d rather start from how long you want to drive, our sister brand Unplugged Cabins keeps an events guide for upstate weekends sorted by drive time.

How to keep a romantic getaway near NYC affordable

  • Go Sunday to Thursday. The same room often costs much less midweek, and the trail, the museum and the good table are yours.
  • Pick the quiet months. Early November, after the leaves, and the weeks between the holidays and ski-school vacation are the calm stretches. The Catskill towns are slower, and the coast is nearly empty.
  • Take the train when you can. Tarrytown and Beacon are both on Metro-North’s Hudson Line, so you skip the car, the gas and the parking.
  • One paid thing a day. A museum, a lantern walk or a ski day, then a free walk and an early dinner. The best parts of these trips cost nothing.
  • Cook one dinner. A cabin with a kitchen and a fire pit pays for itself the first night you don’t go out.

1. Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, NY

The closest real getaway from the city, and the easiest to do without a car: Tarrytown is on Metro-North’s Hudson Line, and our routing puts it about 45 minutes from Times Square by road. Walk Main Street, then catch a show at the Tarrytown Music Hall (13 Main Street), a historic theater with a full production of Annie coming in November.

This season: the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze at Van Cortlandt Manor in Croton-on-Hudson, about 20 minutes north, runs on select evenings through November 8 and every night in October. Tickets are timed, sold in advance only (no tickets on site), and start at $24 on value nights. Parking is free.

Stay: Tarrytown House Estate, 26 acres above the Hudson, with the 1840 King Mansion and newer rooms. Check its offers page for midweek and book-ahead rates before you pick a date.

2. Beacon, NY

Beacon is a river town with a long Main Street, about an hour and a half up the Hudson by road or train. Spend the morning at Dia Beacon, a former box-printing factory full of very large art and very good light. It’s an 8 to 10 minute walk from the Beacon train station, open Friday to Monday, 10 to 5 (arrive by 4:30), and $25 for adults. Then walk Main Street to the east end, where Fishkill Creek comes down over the falls.

Stay: The Roundhouse, a 51-room hotel in a restored 19th-century factory above that waterfall, steps from Main Street, with a restaurant downstairs.

3. Bethlehem, PA

For a winter weekend, Bethlehem is the one. The Moravian settlement in the old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the stone buildings glow at sunset, and the old steel plant is now an arts campus. It’s about an hour and 50 minutes from Times Square without traffic.

This season: Christkindlmarkt, the big German-style Christmas market at SteelStacks, runs Friday to Sunday from November 13 to 29, then Thursday to Sunday from December 3 to 20. Hours are 10 to 6 on Thursdays and Sundays and 10 to 8 on Fridays and Saturdays. Go on a Thursday or Friday, when admission is cheaper and the crowds are thinner. It’s cashless.

Stay: The Sayre Mansion, industrialist Robert Sayre’s 1858 house, now a small inn with antique-filled rooms and breakfast, a short walk from the shops and restaurants. For a splurge on Main Street, Historic Hotel Bethlehem sits next to the Moravian settlement.

4. Woodstock, NY

Woodstock sits at the foot of Overlook Mountain, about 2 hours 15 minutes from Times Square. (The 1969 festival happened in Bethel, about an hour and a half southwest. Woodstock just kept the name.) The romantic part is free: the Overlook Spur Trail, 2.4 miles each way on an old carriage road to a 1950 fire tower at 3,140 feet, with a ledge over the Ashokan Reservoir. It’s steady the whole way up, and the trailhead lot fills early on fall weekends, so be there by 8. Afterward, walk Tinker Street. The Woodstock Artists Association and Museum is open Thursday to Sunday, noon to 5.

Stay: Hotel Dylan, a 22-room boutique hotel on Route 28, a few minutes from the village green. More places to eat and stay in our Woodstock field guide.

5. Narrowsburg, NY

Narrowsburg is a one-street hamlet on a bluff over the Delaware River, about 2 hours 25 minutes from Times Square, with Pennsylvania on the far bank. It’s small enough to see in a morning, which is the point. Book dinner at The Heron (40 Main Street), a 40-seat restaurant cooking from local farms since 2012. It’s open Thursday to Sunday and takes reservations by phone only.

Stay: The Darby, a reworked 1960s riverside lodge on 17 acres across the river in Beach Lake, PA, a short walk to downtown Narrowsburg. Details are on the Narrowsburg Chamber’s page.

6. Hunter, Tannersville and Phoenicia, NY

This is our home stretch of the Catskills, 2 hours 30 to 2 hours 45 minutes from Times Square. It’s high country, around 1,600 to 1,900 feet, with Kaaterskill Falls, the tallest in New York by DEC’s count, and Hunter Mountain at the end of Hunter’s Main Street.

  • Kaaterskill Falls: 0.3 miles to the viewing platform from the DEC lot on Laurel House Road, with no fee. From May through October, every pull-off on Route 23A in the clove is off-limits and gets ticketed, so use the DEC lots and go before 9. See our Tannersville field guide.
  • Diamond Notch Falls: about 2 miles each way from the DEC South Diamond Notch lot off Route 214. Quiet, close and free. See our Hunter field guide.
  • Breakfast in Phoenicia: the Phoenicia Diner is open every day but Wednesday, 8 to 6, with no reservations, so go early. Then Giant Ledge, 1.6 miles each way to a row of rock shelves over the Slide Mountain Wilderness. See our Phoenicia field guide.
  • In winter: Hunter Mountain is about 15 minutes from the cabin below. A ski day, then the hot tub, is about as good as a cold weekend gets.

Clove Creek Cabin

The deck, hot tub and sauna at Clove Creek.

Our cabin sits between two creeks off Route 214. It has a hot tub, a sauna and an indoor fireplace, two queen bedrooms, an Ooni pizza oven and a Solo Stove fire pit on about 600 square feet of deck. Cell service is close to none, but the Wi-Fi is strong and handles Wi-Fi calling. Tannersville is about 12 minutes away and Phoenicia about 15. Cook one dinner at the cabin and spend what you save on breakfast at the diner.

It suits a couple who want a waterfall by day, a fire by night, and nobody else around.

Clove Creek is run by Unplugged Cabins, our sister brand.

7. Windham, NY

Windham sits in the valley of the Batavia Kill on the north side of the Catskills, about 3 hours from Times Square. In fall, climb Windham High Peak: about 3.3 miles each way from the DEC lot at the end of Peck Road, to a 3,524-foot summit that looks out toward the Hudson. It’s free. In winter, note that Windham Mountain is now a members’ club, with public day tickets in winter. Details, and where to eat on Main Street, are in our Windham field guide.

8. Montauk, NY

Montauk in summer is a scene. Montauk in November is the ocean, the wind and a lighthouse, about 3 hours from Times Square, and hotel rates drop with the crowds. Walk the beach below the Montauk Point Lighthouse, then check the Montauk Historical Society’s hours page before you plan on the climb: the lighthouse keeps reduced hours into late November, then closes for the winter.

Stay: Daunt’s Albatross, a 24-room, family-run motel about 100 feet from the ocean, in the Daunt family since 1977. It stays open in winter, with bonfires in the courtyard, and some rooms have a kitchenette.

9. Newport, RI

Newport is pricey in July and a different town in December, about 4 hours from Times Square. The Cliff Walk is free and still the best walk on the coast: 3.5 miles between the ocean and the Gilded Age lawns. One stretch, between Narragansett Avenue and Webster Street, has been closed since a 2022 collapse, so follow the detour signs.

This season: Holidays at the Newport Mansions runs November 21, 2026 to January 3, 2027, when The Breakers and Marble House are dressed for Christmas and open daily (closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day). On select evenings from November 21 to December 27, Sparkling Lights at The Breakers lights up the grounds, with timed tickets from 4 to 6.

Stay: Hammetts Hotel, on the downtown waterfront. Its stay-longer offer, valid October 1 to December 31, 2026 for online bookings, takes 15 percent off two nights and 25 percent off three. Blackout dates apply.

10. Cooperstown, NY

Cooperstown sits at the south end of Otsego Lake, about 4 hours 25 minutes from Times Square, so make it a long weekend. Most people come for the Hall of Fame and leave. Stay for the lake and a cider mill instead. The Hall of Fame is open daily, 9 to 5, and the Fenimore Art Museum on the lake is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 to 4, through December 31. A lot of the area closes after October, so check our Cooperstown field guide for what’s open.

What we pack for two

From November on, the best part of the day is after dark and outside. Three things live in our trunk until spring:

Shared warmth

Rumpl Original Puffy 2-Person Blanket

Big enough for two by the fire pit, on a cold beach or at a lantern walk. Packs into its own stuff sack.

The drive

Stanley Classic Vacuum Bottle, 1.1 qt

Fill it before you leave the city and there’s still hot coffee at the trailhead, or hot cider at the market. Two cups each.

Cold hands

HotHands Hand Warmers, 10 pairs

Air-activated warmers for the Cliff Walk in December, the lift line at Hunter, or one in each glove on the walk home.

The full list is on our Gear page: camping essentials for cold nights.
